Dallas is a city with a robust economy, vast cultural activities, a myriad of sporting events, annual festivals, innovative leisure programs and many educational opportunities. Students of colleges in Dallas have a plethora of choices both in matriculation and professional opportunities once schooling has been completed. The city’s diverse business climate includes high tech industries, defense, financial services, information technology, semiconductors, telecommunications, transportation, real estate and tourism. Fourteen Fortune 500 companies are headquartered within city limits, and another 11 are located in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, making it the third highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the US after New York City and Houston. The Dallas area has 43 percent of the state’s high tech jobs. The city’s pro-business atmosphere lead it to be twice named “the best city in America to do business” by Fortune magazine.
Enrollment in Dallas colleges is well over 100,000 and includes the 38 public and private colleges located within the city limits, with even more in the surrounding metro area. When not too busy studying, students of colleges in Dallas have a choice of many activities with which to fill their time. Cultural events abound in the city with art venues including museums, a symphony center, sculpture center, performing arts centers, and an opera house, among others. Dallas’ city government includes an Office of Cultural Affairs which is responsible for six cultural centers throughout the city, offering funding to local artists and theaters, and initiating public art projects.
The city operates 406 parks that contain 17 lakes, 61.6 miles of biking and jogging trails, 47 neighborhood recreation centers, 60 public swimming pools, Texas’ largest zoo, and hundreds of sports courts. Students of Dallas colleges can also enjoy the 6,000 acre Great Trinity Forest, the largest urban hardwood forest in the US.
Notable events to be enjoyed by students of colleges in Dallas include the annual State Fair of Texas, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, the Wild-flower! Art and Music Festival, a summer Shakespearian festival and the Greek Food Festival of Dallas. Other entertainment venues include the city’s many sporting venues with several professional sports teams located within the city and surrounding metro area.
