Newport News is not only the epitome of the American South, being one of the original communities in the colony of Virginia, but it’s serene location along the Virginia Peninsula, and it’s rich cultural and recreational opportunities, make it a lovely location to pursue one’s higher education at any number of Newport News colleges. This city, part of the Hampton Roads metropolis, was aptly named for the original title of the James River, which flows through the city limits. The citizens are split almost fifty-fifty between white and racial minorities, according to the 2000 Census. But, the people of Newport News are unique and culturally diverse, even offering their own accent, which differs slightly from the rest of the South. The city itself contains a number of history museums, one unique “living” museum, a fine arts center, and an annual art and sculpture festival. Additionally, there are some thirty two city parks, including Newport News Park, the second largest park in the United States, along with a harbor and pier. Newport offers a mild climate that leaves the city warm all year round.
Many of the colleges in Newport News are private, including those of the religious variety, as well as a community college and many specialized career training schools. Newport News colleges are not the only option either, as several large public universities exist in the area. The city itself reports twenty three percent of its citizens having a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, a large VA and military presence within the city provides an ample number of career opportunities. Among the top industries in Newport News are military and aerospace, along with shipbuilding and maritime business. Research and education are also a major part of the city’s economic success, as is the healthcare industries and high tech businesses. Colleges in Newport News are the perfect place for a unique educational experience.
