Learning a second language even for a one semester foreign language course can be the foundation you need to enable traveling to a foreign land and continuing your linguistic learning there on the ground. But if you get a foreign language degree and become fluent speaking and writing the language, the opportunities are endless. Upon taking foreign language courses, you can apply for jobs in that country or as a translator for companies who have a presence there if you prefer to stay in the U.S. Obviously the jobs available when fluent in a second language are most plentiful in the country of origin.
