Photography Description

Photographers play many roles in modern communication, from recording events to creating art for use in graphic design. No matter what the task, however, a photographer is expected to be able to compose compelling visual layouts, capture light, color and shape in artistic fashion, and select the proper photographic equipment for a given task.

Most photographers today are proficient with both digital and film cameras, and can also work both inside a controlled studio setting as well as adapt to any number on-site environments. Furthermore, photographers are responsible for every aspect of creating a picture, including composing the elements of the shot, deciding on angles and lighting, ensuring correct exposure, developing or electronically recording the image, and editing or modifying the image.

Colleges for photography will not only teach students the basics of operating equipment, but will also help students develop an artistic eye for layout and composition. Photography Careers

Photographers can choose to specialize in any of a vast array of career paths. Event photographers, for example, document special occasions such as weddings or graduations, and will have opportunities to travel and meet people. Fashion Photographers work with clothing designers, magazines, and advertising agencies to create images promoting clothes and accessories, while Portrait Photographers may spend most of their time in a studio, working with families to help create meaningful records of special life-moments.

For the more adventurous, news photography may be an option. These photographers often work side by side with other journalists to capture images of culturally significant people and places, and may be required to practice their craft under unusual circumstances, such as during severe whether or on location at newsworthy events.

A degree in photography is a necessary first step down any of these career paths, and for individuals who have graduated from colleges for photography, career opportunities are quite diverse. Many photographers are self-employed, and can therefore control their working environments and schedules. Photographers willing to contribute to online or electronic media will be in high demand for the foreseeable future.
