Business Leadership Description

Business leaders come from varied backgrounds. Most have college degrees, but a business leadership degree is not an absolute requirement. People with degrees in business management are logical choices for management positions, but people with non-business degrees such as engineering or English with other business leadership training also make excellent managers. Many colleges offer a business leadership program within their business administration departments, with programs offered both for students on campus and online for people already in the work force.

Career Opportunities in Business Leadership

The career opportunities for people with leadership degrees are limitless. There is an ongoing need for management talent at all levels of industry, government, and in the non-profit sector. A person with a strong business leadership background can not only rise into the upper levels of management in their organization, but they are also well qualified to become entrepreneurs creating their own businesses.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth in general business leadership positions is expected to be about the same as the average of other job categories over the next decade. There will be intense competition for upper management positions, but entry level and middle management positions will see good growth. People with business leadership training who are also specialists in another field will have very good job prospects in the coming decade. For example, people who have finished a business leadership program and also have experience in information technology and computer systems management will have excellent job prospects.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the number of CEO and upper level executive jobs will not show much growth between 2008 and 2018, but because these positions have high prestige and pay well, workers with strong leadership skills and leadership degrees will be well positioned to compete for the jobs as they become available. A person with good leadership skills is likely to become a general operations manager during her career, even if she does not aspire to becoming her company’s Chief Executive Officer.

Many people with strong business leadership training will choose to start their own businesses over the next decade. Entrepreneurs come from many backgrounds and often choose to go out on their own when they feel they have risen as high as they can in their current job and are looking for greater challenges and a better arena for using their business leadership skills.

People with business leadership degrees who have been through a strong business leadership program will be well positioned to start or expand their careers in the coming years as the economy grows out of the current recession.
