It is also possible for those who are in operations management to transfer to other kinds of managerial positions, such as industrial relations manager, chief financial officer, and even chief executive officer. Oftentimes an operations manager is in charge of several production facilities, which may mean that he has to travel a lot or he has to work for long hours, particularly during those times when production deadlines need to be met.

Operations management degree graduates often face stiff competition when applying for jobs. However, the advantage of the operations manager’s job is that it is often immune to corporate restructuring and industrial automation efforts. Therefore, while it is much more difficult to apply for an operations manager position, once a person is in, his job and status are relatively secure. Meanwhile, applicants who are equipped with college degrees and have relevant experience are preferred by many companies. In relation to this, it has been found that majority of operations managers work in major manufacturing categories, such as computers, transportation, and metals.
