Journalism Careers
In general, a journalist is anyone involved in the gathering and distribution of news, but there are many specialized careers within the field, each of which focuses on a different aspect of this process.
Television reporters are perhaps the most familiar of all journalists, since they are the ones who convey news stories directly to the public. They are most commonly seen “on location” via television broadcasts, observing events and explaining them to viewers at home. Behind the scenes they are responsible for organizing a story and coordinating the video, pictures and other sources that go with it. Correspondents are reporters who focus on one particular topic or location.
Writers, like TV reporters, are responsible for finding stories and distributing them, but instead of television or video, a writer’s stories are conveyed via printed or online text, such as magazines, newspapers or blogs. Written news stories are also sometimes read aloud by TV newscasters, or are recorded for radio broadcasts or podcasts. For a writer aspiring to work in print journalism, journalism college courses should include writing classes as well as all other general journalism courses.
Editors are the managers of the journalism world. Whether it be online, television, or print media, an editor is responsible for making sure that stories are accurate, interesting and sensible. Like other journalists, editors must have journalism degrees so that they fully understand the entire process and can work well with their reporters and writers. Print editors may also be directly responsible for layout, proofreading and other aspects of presentation.
Newscasters are another familiar type of journalist, since they, in the world of television and radio news, serve as the voice that introduces and concludes each segment, whether it is for local, national, or international news programs. Newscasters, sometimes also called news analysts or anchors, are primarily responsible for collecting news from various sources (such as writers, reporters and correspondents) and then presenting it in a logical manner. Most news programs also utilize specific newscasters to report on specific beats, such as sports, weather or entertainment.
Program Directors, like editors, work mainly behind the scenes. They are in charge of actually running a news program and may have technical as well as organizational responsibilities, such as managing cameras, other equipment, and collaborating with newscasters and reporters to determine the flow of the program.
As far as the number of different career options goes not many fields rival that of journalism. College degrees are necessary for all types of journalists, and journalism college will prepare you for anything you may encounter in this field.
