Today, more and more people are seizing the opportunity to maximize their personal and career potential by earning degrees or achieving certification through online web-based learning from the comfort and convenience of their homes or offices. Online web-based learning is a method of distance education in which neither student nor teacher needs to be physically present in a classroom. Instead, online web-based learning classes are delivered or managed through the use of computer applications, while students are able to utilize the unlimited informational resources available on the Internet.
Online web-based learning evolved from correspondence courses, which were once a means of offering learning opportunities to students who lived in remote areas that lacked the population or funds to properly support a trade school or university.

Computer-assisted Instruction (CAI) - online web-based learning application where lessons are pre-programmed and presented online, with the computer functioning as a self-sufficient learning tool.
Computer-mediated Instruction (CME) - online web-based learning application in which the instructor still pays a pivotal role, similar to a traditional educational setting; however, he or she uses the computer to aid in the delivery lessons. With this online web-based learning system, the professor and students often communicate by means of email, instant messenger, fax and live conferencing in chat rooms. Online web-based learning exams are taken on the Internet and assignments are received either via email or through a webpage supplied by the instructor.
Computer-managed Instruction (CMI) - online web-based learning application that allows instructors to utilize computers to organize lessons and keep track of student progress. With the CMI online web-based learning method, lessons aren't always presented via computer, but more often than not CMI and CAI are used in combination.
In the United States, online web-based learning options are nearly endless. Both private and public schools offer a wide range of courses and degree programs-bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, MBAs and technical or trade certifications-through their online web-based learning programs. But be warned: It is the responsibility of the student, as a consumer, to make sure that the school of his or her choice holds proper accreditation. Unfortunately, there are a number of fraudulent online web-based learning institutions that "reward" students' hard work with worthless diplomas or degrees that hold no bearing in the real world. Don't get caught in the trap!
